In the northern part of Darkshore, there’s a massive whirlpool known as the Maw of the Void. Alliance players can jump down into the whirlpool and complete the Ghosts in the Dark achievement that allows them to discover the secret of the Maw. I’ve heard that you can also get the Going Down? achievement without taking fall damage or you could try it during Brewfest to get completely smashed and get the Almost Blind Luck achievement.
As a Horde player, I discovered this gem sometime last year. Jumping into it starts a short cutscene of your toon being sucked into the whirlpool. You end up in the Bashal’Aran Collapse where a lone Cenarian Circle druid sits by the water’s edge. All I can say is, it must get mighty lonely down there.
Speak to Bielara to teleport you back up to the surface. Oh, and if you’ve ever wondered if the huge whirlpool in Stranglethorn Vale did something similar… it doesn’t. All I got was a repair bill.
Wow, never knew about this spot. Have to check it out. I love all the little secret locations in Azeroth.
I can confirm the Going Down achievement.
Also, when Alliance completes that quest they also get an achievement for it. There’s a similar pool for Horde in Azshara (I think), but I don’t believe there is an achievement tied to theirs.
@Ffpmmarc – me too, wish there were more or at least more that I know about :P
@Psynister – Not sure about a pool in Azshara but I think our equivalent is ‘Joy Ride’ which requires you to ride the full length of the Rocketway. I featured some of the images in this post.
I did exactly the same in STV after first visiting the Darkshore one :P
