Some things have been bugging me on the beta lately. I was annoyed to find what almost appeared to be random flagging on a PVE server if you were just working on Pet Battles. I thought this was a bug since you would be flagged flying into Mulgore, for example, but I’ve since read that it’s an intentional feature. Thx to BrokenRavens for bringing this to my attention.
@Cymre Speaking of pet battles, you may want to see this forum thread. Suddenly pet battles seem less fun. http://t.co/9GEcO5Pm

Here’s what Mumper had to say on the matter:
First off, the exact pet you were fighting when you were broke out of pet battle will be respawned. Same quality, stats and skin color. Second, you will get a 3s damage shield that absorbs 50% of incoming damage to help negate the fact that you need time to recover after exiting the pet battle interface. Both of these will be in for the next build.
We feel its very important to keep the PvP aspect of the game intact and if you choose to play on a PvP server, you will certainly be fighting for those rare spawns. (This rule effects PVE servers as well but only in contested areas.)
I admit I didn’t get bothered too often while battling. In fact, there have only been two occasions.
The other night in Searing George, I was knocked out of my Battle (quite a challenging one due to the level) after a Hunter decided to attack me. All the battles in that zone were particularly challenging due to the lack of suitable pets I had at the time). Tonight while researching my Wild Pets of Outland post, I decided to go AFK while I went to do a few things, paying for the auto-flight from Hellfire to Netherstorm before I left. Normally you would be safe as an auto-flight kicks off the PVP flag but when I came back I saw I was dead outside Area 52. Little did I know, a L85 gnome had killed me and was busy tea-bagging me on my return. If you notice in my previous post, even though I’m currently L87 (I’ve stopped levelling so I can be surprised), I was wearing my Pet Battle set (non-transmog) so he must have felt high and mighty being a low level 85 killing someone when they’re AFK.
When I rezzed, I just buffed myself and gave myself a basic heal. This person (I’m assuming a kid) decided to fly to my rez spot and follow me as I flew all around Netherstorm. When I noticed that he was indeed following me I decided to switch back to my PVE gear and contemplated kicking his ass but to be honest I was feeling quite tired and wanted to get my previous post published. In the end I just blew it off and flew back to Area 52 to check something but I’d had enough for the night and logged out.
I really enjoy putting together these guides and sharing my experiences with whoever cares to read but times like this, the earlier achievements and new captures that I managed to get earlier don’t seem as shiny and new as they were.
ouch….even on a PVE server….doesnt seem like a good idea to me.
I’ve heard this should be sorted come live, so we’ll see
This was on a PVE server? If so, are you saying that contested areas are going to be truly contested or just contested during pet battles? (I have beta access, but haven’t really been in it at all).
From what I’ve noticed, when I enter the contested zone (Lost Isles – normal realm), I’m flagged
Can’t be sure from your final paragraph there, but if you’re feeling deflated by this… ahem… tool – please don’t be! I’ve only just discovered your brilliant blog and its brilliant pet battle content, and I’m really enjoying catching up. I’d be gutted if some idiot took the wind out of your sails.
As to the content of this post… The fact that the battles remove you so completely from your own normal ability set suggests you’d be seriously disadvantaged if you were attacked. (And you will only EVER be the defender in these situations, of course.) I appreciate it’s part of Blizzard’s effort to reignite world PVP, but I can’t help but think any PVP in these circumstances is going to be horribly one-sided.
Thanks so much for your kind words :) I agree, if I wanted to PVP more I would go to a PVP server or do more BGs/arena but I’m not on one so it defeats the purpose of just wanting to have some fun.
From the thread, it looks like, if you’re on a PVE server, you’ll only be flagged for PVP in those areas where that would normally happen. (Durotar if you’re Alliance, or whatever.) So I guess there’s hope. If it’s happening now in zones where it shouldn’t, I guess that’s just down to the fact it’s beta.
I’m on a PVP realm anyway, so I’m boned. :D
LOL, I just thought it was odd since I’m Horde and it’s one of our starting areas but I’ve heard that’s intended too for new players to get a feel for how to play. I understand about contested areas, but never-the-less it’s still an annoying edition :P
This just seems wrong. I know so many people who will love camping pet battlers, in fact I suspect I’m married to one. It’s like they get some things so right and others so so wrong.
The battle normally goes to whoever gets the jump on the other player in world pvp, add in the fact that in this case, you’re focusing on pets and it makes an unfair situation even worse. I’m just glad that I’ve got a bona fide ganker to follow me around making mincemeat out of any griefers. Shame I can’t rent him out to other pet lovers.
I’m lucky to say I have a pocket ass-kicker too, he just needs to be on when I am :P
Part of the confusion about this comes from the Cross Realm Zones feature that they are implementing. In beta we’re on a PvE server, but we are “cross realmed” with the PvP server. So sometimes we’ll cross into a new zone and suddenly be flagged for PvP because, if there is low population on the PvE server zone, it puts us in the PvP server zone. This makes the population of gankers in certain zones much higher depending on what kind of server you end up on. This shouldn’t happen when MoP goes live because PvE servers will only be crossed with PvE servers. That’s the way it was explained to me anyway. ;) I still don’t like the fact that your flagged when doing pet battles.
Thx for the explanation. That’s pretty much what was said to me after I posted this but you gave me a very clear description so hopefully, it makes it clearer for others :)
